I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

What is the question Maya Angelou offers?

Literature is often seen as a question minus the answer. I need a question that she offers and I must be able to provide an answer that I believe the novel begs from the reader.

I think you are essentially asking a thematic question here. Go to the themes section at GradeSaver and you can formulate quite a few important questions that Angelou poses. For me, I would pick the following:

Race and appearance

In the world Maya grows up in, beauty is narrowly defined as being white, with blond hair and blue eyes. Maya believes as a child that being black means being ugly, and thinks of her appearance as a "black ugly dream" that she will wake out of. Is this true of society today?

I don't see a question in this novel; it's a novel of self-discovey and reflection; it's an autobiography. She uses this novel to inform not question........ her purpose was to make the reader question........
