What's up with the end of the novel? Do you think it's kind of sudden? What were you expecting?

Maya is single, sixteen and pregnant: that is good enough for Maya. At least now she is more self-aware. She has connected with her parents and escaped poverty. More importantly, she is not being abused. This is as happy as it gets for Maya so I was kind of glad it ended before something bad happened.
