I believe the most significant event would be the novel's climax when a peasant man was supplying the soldiers with water, regardless of being abused by one of the men. The peasant continued his task without hesitation, and O'Brien, disgusted by one of his fellow soldier's actions questions the purpose of the war, and the actions of those fighting. He questions what they've become.

“ I felt a rage inside of me like no enemy could bring, I wanted to destroy that soldier, what is this war becoming?”
