In the first Book, Achilles clearly tells his mother that he finds a short life acceptable, as long as his life represents both glory and honor. This changes in Book II, when he pleads with his mother to intervene with Zeus on his behalf. His pride won't allow for defeat at the hands of Agamemnon. Thus, this very humanlike god is unable to accept defeat and desires his mother request special treatment.
