I see no mention in the text of Jasper using a typewriter, so I infer that he used a pen or pencil and paper. The information in the text, simply alludes to "writing" and the papers on his desk.

It was now striking midnight, and Jasper Chase sat in his room staring at the papers on his desk and going over the last half hour with painful persistence.

On his desk lay a pile of manuscript. All through the heat of summer he had been writing.

Jasper watched the two figures until they disappeared in the crowd on the walk. Then he turned to his desk and began to write.
