Krebs and his parents also hold opposite views of love. Love and romance are not enabling for Krebs: they are a direct threat to his freedom. Artisans "want love to be fun, and this means filled with sensual variety and spontaneity" (Montgomery, Artisan 28). This is why he prefers foreign women, particularly the Germans, to American women. The American girls, who in his absence have grown into women, intrigue him. He does not want to go through the ritual--especially the talk--that is necessary to possess a woman, however. With European women, the language barrier kept talk to a minimum, much to Krebs's satisfaction.
