International sanctions formulations are designed to put pressure on a country or dictator to change his ways or step down peacefully. These sanctions can be instituted by a particular trading partner or the U.N. The O.A.S (Organization of American States) imposed severe sanctions on Trujillo but, in true Trujillo form, he dismissed them. THe sanctions were isolating the DR more than it had ever been. The economy was on the brink of disaster.
