Why does Patria go to such lengths to protect Nelson?

Nelson is Patria's son. Her first concern is her children, namely Nelson, because she believes that Minerva and Manolo have influenced him, and as a result, he might be exposed to danger. It is for this reason that Patria makes the decision to send him away to a religious school.
