Explain why so many slaves were found in one area of the country

Southern states believed they needed to keep a balance between the numbers of slave and free states that would give them a balanced position in Congress. The South also felt that they needed slaves to develop their various work intensive farms and plantations while the North didn't need "free workers" as much.
