"Slavery is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible for women. Superadded to the burden common to all, they have wrongs, and sufferings, and mortifications peculiarly their own."
The stories of female slaves were far different that their male counterparts. According to the text, abuse of female slaves was more emotional than anything else. Sexual advances and rape were common; young black women victimized by white men often never recovered from their shame. This text created an entire new type of slave narrative, a narrative that gave women a voice. Jacobs emphasized the fact that beyond the beating and sexual abuse, these women were under the constant threat of losing their children, and that the loss of their children constituted an experience that motched any kind of physical punishment that could be inflicted.
