Why did Harriet have a child with Mr. Sands?

Harriet had a relationship with Mr. Sands. She was fond of Mr. Sands, and actually came to have feelings for him. Their relationship, however, was partially a way to deter Dr. Flint who was building her a house and determined to have Harriet for himself. When Dr. Flint announced the house was almost complete....
