Saul decides to quit the hockey league and return to Mantiouwadge. Saul explains that even though he was a star player in the league, the persecution robbed him of all enjoyment of the game. Saul says that he will find work in Manitouwadge and will play with the Moose again. Saul finds a job as a deadfall bucker, meaning that he is employed in cutting tree lumber into smaller pieces. His supervisors soon see that he is a hard worker, and he is transferred to a temporary position at a nearby logging camp. All of the other employees in the camp are white men from various national backgrounds. The men frequently taunt Saul, but when he ignores them, they persecute him more fiercely and even attack him. One day, Saul fights back and badly beats one of the other men. The others leave him alone from then on.
In Chapter 42, Saul is 17 years old when he returns to Manitouwadge from the logging camp. He is now full of rage due to all of the mistreatment, and he plays overly aggressively during games. He eventually must leave the team because of his uncurbed aggression.
In Chapter 43, Saul buys an old truck after he turns 18 years old. He leaves Manitouwadge in search of work.
