Who are the sheehans? Why is their treatment of Saul so important in the book??

staying with an old Irish couple, the Sheehans, huge hockey fans who tell Saul he won’t be the first Native person to join the NHL. I suppose they give Saul hope that he can make the NHL but they don't seem to offer him much support when times get hard.
