This is only a short answer question space. Erasing the children's identity was essentially killing them from the inside. The precious years they spent with their families were attacked the moment they stepped into that school. The school systematically tried to obliterate the soul of each child. Taking the Indian out of each child meant suffocating them and destroying who they were.
