Discuss the connection between loss and alcohol abuse from your reading so far (chapters 1-4) in Indian Horse

Much of this story is told in flashback. Chapter 1-4 does not yet get into the depths of Saul's alcohol abuse, but the reader certainly can see a connection. In the early chapters, Saul is part of a therapy group at The New Dawn Centre, a treatment facility. He has hit bottom, but we sense there is so much more to his story. The tale of residential school is directly related to alcohol and loss. Many indigenous people exposed to these schools were forced in into alcohol for solace and to numb their pain. This directly leads to loss of so many things that they deserved to have and to keep. The extent of Saul's loss is immense which we find out in later chapters.
