Hockey had broken Saul, or rather white people in hockey had broken Saul. The very sport that was to save him from becoming the stereotype "drunken Indian" pushed him into the role in his adult life. The racism entrenched in the game would not allow Saul to thrive. Saul did not have the support to withstand the racism he experienced while playing on white teams. The racism eventually broke Saul and he became the thing that white people expected him to be.
