In Chapter 13, the children briefly play by a nearby stream. They are momentarily happy, but they soon feel even deeper sorrow and yearning for their previous lives. Here, nature is juxtaposed with the sterile monotony of the school. The water and the fish remind them of home.The children are, for a few brief moments, in their element: where they are meant to be.

When we bent finally and took the fish in our hands to set them back into the water, most of us were crying. ch 13
