How did the game provide Saul with the means to survive

Saul discovers Hockey at St. Jerome's. That was the only good thing this school ever gave him. Saul uses hockey as a means to escape the hell that was St. Jerome's. Hockey helps Saul him forget about his problems for a little while. When Saul plays hockey, he becomes free from the bounds of the dismal existence forced upon him by residential school.
