Indian Horse
How does the image of the little plastic Indian figures being thrown onto the ice and the “war whoops” that erupt when Saul is playing affect him? What are some other examples of racism shown in the movie?

I think that this particular event is a turning point for Saul. Saul's experience with the Toronto Marlies was overwhelmingly negative. Saul was used to hearing racial slurs from the crowd. Slurs like "chief" and "wagon burner" were common. Saul had endured racism like being kicked off white teams because he is too good and witnessing his native teammates beat up and urinated on at a truck stop. The plastic Indian figures being thrown is another reminder that he will never be accepted in the white world of hockey. Saul couldn't find the strength to endure ten thousand spectators making racist Indian Chants and throwing these figures on the ice. Saul felt he had to quit hockey.
