I think much of the toxic masculinity in the book is seen in the white towns and white hockey leagues. Players are celebrated and desecrated through a narrow lens of masculinity that includes racism. Saul and his teammates are reduced to caricatures of "Indians" as well as humiliated by "tough" townsfolk in the worst ways possible.
