By the end of chapter 4 Saul's family is still intact. They live in the wilderness and villages, moving often to elude further harm from the white people. Saul’s family is comprised of his parents and his grandmother. His father is named John Indian Horse, his mother is named Mary Mandamin, and his grandmother is named Naomi Indian Horse. They are all of indigenous descent. Saul’s mother teaches him English. The natural world binds the family together. When the family is fractured we see the natural world vanish from their lives.
