This is a difficult question. Wagamese's book sheds light on the institutional racism of Canada's past. I'm hesitant to say that this story (it spans through to the 1990's) is what Canada is today. There is no doubt that residential schools and racism were a type of genocide . Canada has since tried to address its past. To what extent? I'm not sure but there is more awareness of injustices today than before.
