Saul and his family are caught between the white world, which wants to assimilate them into white culture, and the traditional Indian world which has become harder to live. We can especially see this in the conflict between Saul's mother and Naomi, Saul's grandmother. Saul's mother has been conditioned by the white Catholic Church whereas Naomi still believes in the old traditional ways.
