A "heathen" is a derogatory word implying savage. The standard definition is: a person who does not belong to a widely held religion (especially one who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim) as regarded by those who do. Sister Ignacia claims that Lonnie’s father is a “heathen” and “impure.” This is a part of the stripping of culture and genocide that took place in residential schools.
