The conflict underlines that there was systemic racism practiced in hockey in Canada since it became a game. There is no disputing that racism affected people of color from the audience, to the teams, to the media. I think this racist atmosphere has changed but there is still much more room to grow. The NHL now has more and more players representing diverse backgrounds. The minor leagues also reflect this diversity. Hockey culture, however, still holds the remnants of racism seen in Indian Horse. There are still too many examples of racism and intolerance on and off the ice. Things are changing though. Fans of hockey are more diverse and the league knows that inclusivity is essential both financially and ethically.
