Saul writes, “Our talk rolls and tumbles like the rivers that served as our roads. Our legends tell of how we emerged from the womb of our Mother the Earth...We sprang forth intact, with Aki’s heartbeat thrumming in our ears, prepared to become her stewards and protectors” (Wagamese 1). What does this reveal about the Indigenous culture? What is this message meant to convey to the reader?

Saul's description of his indigenous identity is firmly rooted in nature. There is something very organic about Ojibway creation that ties Mother Earth with the soul of Saul's people.
