Is hockey a theme in the novel?
I am to do an essay on the thematic significance of hockey, but I am having trouble connecting it to his life before, during and after attending St. Jeromes.

Hockey is really the subtext of the book, The themes are systemic racism, abuse, assimilation.... Hockey is an extension of Saul. He is almost magic with his skills. Hockey is Saul's ticket out of the abusive residential school but it is also leads to the rejection of Saul in the white world. Hockey merely supports the themes in the novel.
