Certainly, the earth and the land is integral to grandmother's identity and sense of the world. She is able to interpret the world through nature. There is pride and wisdom in nature. Saul feels this connection. When Saul enters the white world, this connection is severed. Saul eventually needs to go back to God's lake in order to find himself again.
