Saul's experience at St. Joseph's was, like all indigenous kids, dehumanizing. Saul was lucky in that he could read and write; he also had a Christian name already. This shielded him from many of the miseries inflicted on him by the nuns and priests. Saul found he could be left alone and disappear into books. Hockey was Saul's saviour at the school: hockey and Father Leboutilier. Both kept Saul relatively safe from abuses though we learn something much darker about Father Leboutilier later in the book.
