Saul hits bottom around chapter 47 when he goes into a relative coma for his alcoholism. It is only when he has a stroke and ends up in the hospital that things really change. The social workers tell him about the New Dawn Centre, the best place for Native alcoholics to get care. Saul is reluctant, but his doctor says that he’ll die if he doesn’t quit now.

Saul is a product of his environment. He was physically, sexually, and emotionally abused for much of his life. This was not his fault.
