I don't think Chris fully understood the dangers of the Alaskan wilderness. Chris was rather naive and romantic in his vision of communing with nature. He took his inspiration from people like Thoreau who wrote of an idyllic experience in a cottage beside a pond. The Alaskan wilderness is wild and unforgiving to those who are ill-prepared for it.
