I believe that Krakauer begins Chris' story in this manner in order to establish Chris' outlook as he begins his journey. From his letter, we can easily surmise that Chris was upbeat, feeling prepared, and intent upon finishing what he's started. Many people considered Chris' actions a sort of suicide mission.... from this short letter, we can see that he had every intention of returning.
