The quotein the epigraph is from Thoreau. It speaks to rejecting opulence built around lies and materialism. In chapter 12, Chris begins to turn his back on society and his family. He considers them to be part of materialistic society based on lies (especially his father). Chris is becoming a counter-culture rebel looking for truth outside societal conformity.
