How did Carine and her family respond to food after learning that Chris died of starvation?

After picking up Chris's body, Carine eats "every scrap of food the cabin attendants set in front of her" on the plane. Later, she stops eating and loses so much weight people think she's an anorexic. Chris' mom loses ten pound, and his father gains eight. It seems that each family member changed their eating habits as a result of his death.
