How does the following quote from Thoreau relate to the relationship between McCandless and Franz:“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” What chapter is this in?

This quote isn't in the novel... None-the-less, Franz enters the novel in Chapter Six of the text, and their relationship is a close one. Unfortunately, Franz comes to see Chris as a son, and Chris doesn't want any ties. Franz opened himself up, all while Chris readied himself to move on. I'm not quite sure how "mass of men" ties into all of this. I will need to research the quote and read it in context.
