Krakauer considers himself to share many qualities with Chris McCandless. Krakauer lets the reader into his own past experiences in order to help understand the psyche of adventurers. We see certain dissatisfaction with main stream society. There is also a frustration with parental authority, specifically to do with father-figures. Through Krakauer we can observe restlessness with the status-quo that makes them long for physical and emotional challenges.
