In the last letter Chris sent to Westerberg, he wrote, "This is the last time you shall hear from me," and "If the adventure proves fatal and you don't ever hear from me again . . . ." I think don't think that Chris had a death wish. I think Chris acknowledges the chance that he may not come back. Chris was woefully unprepared for the Alaskan wilderness and that may have weighed heavily on his mind before he went in. Chris had put himself in risky situations before but he must have acknowledges the particular danger of this one.
