Chris had multiple favourite authors he was influenced by and one of Chris's literary influences. Jack London's works, more than his actual character he was his favourite “London was his favorite. He’d try to convince every snowbird who walked by that they should read Call of the Wild.” McCandless had been infatuated with London since childhood. London’s fervent condemnation of capitalist society, his glorification of the primordial world, his championing of the great unwashed—all of it mirrored McCandless’s passions.” (Chapter 5 page 31) Influenced McCandless's trek into the Alaskan wilderness. Jack London's work, Call of the Wild, was complete fiction, but Chris seemed to let the book take him over. Jack London also helped form Chris's spirit of freedom and his desire to live life in the wild of the United States. Another one of Chris's literary influences. Tolstoy was a Russian author. He believed that people should live off the land, practice moderation, refrain from owning private property, and using money.Last but not least was Chris Thoreau. Thoreau was an advocator of integrity, similar to Tolstoy. What he was most famous for, was his reclusive years spent meditating and keeping a journal at Walden pond where he built himself a cabin and lived. “ He was also able to forgive, or overlook, the shortcomings of his literary heroes: Jack London was a notorious drunk; Tolstoy, despite his famous advocacy of celibacy, had been an enthusiastic sexual adventurer as young man and went on to father at least thirteen children...” (Chapter 12 page 85)
