Was McCandless running away from his past or trying to make a better future

I think Chris was doing a bit of both. He certainly was running away from his past: running away from his identity. He attempted to re-create himself under the moniker Alexander Supertramp. Chris could not, however, escape from himself. Chris's romantic notions of a solitary life in the wilderness were in contrast with Chris's own vulnerabilities and sense of self.
