What are the first impressions of Alex based on his post card at the start of the chapter

The post card is from Fairbanks Alaska. The tone and content is actually pretty hurtful to Chris's family and friends. He seems like he is doing what he wants to: having a great adventure in Alaska. He is however dismissive of the people who care about him. He alludes to not coming home for a long time or even dying. One wonders if he realises the gravity of his words.
