What did McCandless do to prepare for his trek to Alaska?

Chris was completely ill prepared. He had little in the way of gear and experience. Chris goes into the wild bringing a rifle, some ammunition, rice, a small cook stove, books, a book about plants, and a few other items. He leaves his map behind on the truck dashboard of the man who drops him off. Many native Alaskans were shocked to hear how clueless he was about what was in store for him.
