What do we know about the real character from the author’s note?

From the author's note, we learn that Chrisopher McCandless hitchhiked to Alaska in April of 1992. We also learn that prior to arriving in Alaska, he had just graduated from college (with honors), changed his name, given away his savings, abandoned his car, and burned whatever cash he had.
