What is the purpose of including the full story of Gene Rossellini?

Gene Rosellini is a brilliant man from a wealthy family who decides to see if he can live as primitive man did, and succeeds at it for over a decade before deciding his experiment has failed, and killing himself. This is similar to Chris's seeming unstableness when he finds himself completely alone.
