What is the purpose of the Author's Note?

The purpose of the author's note is to explain how he came to write the story, and why he couldn't let it go after the magazine article was completed. In the note, Krakauer explains the different ways in which his life is similar to that of Chris'..... he also outlines the story he will tell.
