Who did Chris want to take with him on his trip?

I see evidence of him wanting Eric to accompany him to South Africa. Is this the trip you are referring to?

“We’d get into arguments about it once in a while,” recalls Hathaway. “Chris didn’t like going through channels, working within the system, waiting his turn. He’d say, ‘Come on, Eric, we can raise enough money to go to South Africa on our own, right now.
