Who is Jim Gallien and how is he important to McCandless ' journey?

Jim Gallien picks Chris up hitch hiking four miles outside of Fairbanks. Jim has an instant liking for Chris as a person but he fears that Chris is naive about living in the Alaskan wild. He thinks Chris is unprepared and uneducated about what to expect. He tries to give Chris his hiking boots.
