Why is Krakauer’s purpose in highlighting the case of Sir John Franklin?

The public viewed Sir John's pride and arrogance as responsible for the deaths of 140 of his men during the war. The viewed him as reckless. Krakauer uses the example of Sir John to point out that Chris may have been filled with the sense of youthful adventure and recklessness, but he had also faced his goal head on and survived for sixteen weeks. Krakauer sees Chris as having been purposeful..... that his actions had meaning. Sir John faced the wild with great preparation and material comforts, specifically, he avoided all hardship. Chris immersed himself in the nature around him, avoiding civilization.
