Why was making new monikers such an important ritual to Chris and the others?

I don't understand the point of them making new names and I have came up with multiple thoughts. Chris made the new name so no one finds him or he makes his name to symbolize what he wants to be but I can't figure it out

Chris wanted to distance himself from his former identity. He wanted to sever his ties from his "privileged" past. He wanted to be a counter-culture adventurer; hence the outlandish name Alexander Supertramp.
