THe narrator dreams of becoming somebody like Booker T. Washington. He wants to achieve the stoic sense of hard work and independence that defines the American Alpha male. He wants to be visible for all the right reasons. He doesn't want to be relegated to merely a minority or socio-economic group. He dreams of becoming visible like in Langston Hughes's poem "deferred" which is echoed throughout the novel.
