People of Iping had different thoughts on Griffin. What were they?

  Wells portrays Iping as a small community where everybody knows each other's business. They are very superstitious and do not take kindly to anything "new". The townsfolk think Griffin as an outsider: an alien of sorts with his strange appearance and his constant attempts of concealment.
